Maroondah’s shopping story is much bigger than Eastland and Croydon Main Street. Across the area are major centres, village shopping areas and small neighbourhood strips that people rely on for coffee, takeaway, groceries, services and everyday connection.

MX is building a growing community guide to 37 local shopping areas: where they are, what you can find there today, how they developed and what local people remember about them.

This page is a snapshot rather than a finished history. Shops open, close and change hands. New photographs, stories and corrections will be added as MX visits each area and hears from residents and business owners.

This growing collection uses MX photographs from shopping areas across Maroondah. More places will be added as they are photographed and checked.

Food and businesses today

Food is a natural starting point for documenting these areas. The current MX database includes cafés, bakeries, restaurants, takeaway shops, pubs, specialty food stores, supermarkets and other food-related businesses. Closed venues are retained in the underlying database because they may become part of a strip’s history rather than simply disappearing from the record.

The database helps answer practical questions: Where can you get coffee near home? Which strips have a bakery or an independent grocer? Where are the clusters of restaurants? Which local centres have lost or gained businesses? It is not intended to declare one place “the best”; it provides a starting point for useful local stories and community recommendations.

Local history

How Maroondah’s shopping areas developed

Many local shopping areas grew around transport, housing and everyday needs. In Croydon, the railway helped establish the town centre, and the first Main Street shops appeared from 1885. Early businesses included a general store, butcher, baker, grocer and timber merchant. Read the City of Maroondah’s History of Croydon.

Ringwood’s commercial centre also developed around its railway station and Main Street. Later car ownership encouraged roadside retail, while the arrival and expansion of Eastland changed the scale and focus of shopping in central Ringwood. Read the City of Maroondah’s History of Ringwood.

Smaller neighbourhood strips often have less formally recorded history. MX will use council heritage research, historical societies, library collections, old newspapers, business interviews and community memories to build those stories carefully. Keeping it useful

How MX will keep the guide current

  • Record the date when an area or business is checked
  • Add new businesses and mark closures without erasing the historical record
  • Use original photographs and record when they were taken
  • Separate verified history from community recollections that still need checking
  • Invite business owners and residents to suggest corrections
  • Publish meaningful updates when a strip changes—not merely change the date

Help us tell the story

Some of the most valuable local knowledge will not be found in an official report. It may be an old photograph in a drawer, the name of a former milk bar, a shopkeeper who served several generations, or the reason neighbours still choose one small strip over a larger centre.
