Maroondah’s specialist burger map is much smaller than its pizza, coffee or fish-and-chip map. The approved August snapshot contains only 7 operational businesses primarily categorised as hamburger restaurants, and all of them are in Croydon, Ringwood or Heathmont.
That does not mean those are the only places serving burgers. It tells us where burgers are the business’s primary public identity in the current dataset.
Ringwood’s two strict specialist records are both at Eastland. MX photograph, July 2026.
Why does Croydon hold most of the specialist map?
Croydon accounts for four of the seven strict records. Ringwood has two, both at Eastland, and Heathmont has one. On this narrow definition, Croydon holds more than half of Maroondah’s current specialist burger category.
The result is useful, but it needs careful language. The broader approved dataset contains 13 businesses with a burger-related public type or subtype. Some are primarily cafes, chicken shops, Italian restaurants, fish-and-chip businesses or general takeaways. A burger may be available there without defining the whole business.
7 strict specialists
These businesses are primarily classified as hamburger restaurants in the approved, operational August snapshot.
13 broader category matches
This wider signal shows why a specialist directory should not be described as every place where a burger can be ordered.
The specialist map has large gaps
Twelve of the 15 suburbs in the MX food coverage area have no strict specialist record. Residents may still have burgers available through pubs, cafes, fish-and-chip shops, chicken businesses, takeaway menus or nearby suburbs. The gap is a category finding, not a claim about every local menu.
It also makes the next data refresh meaningful. A new specialist opening outside Croydon, Ringwood or Heathmont would materially change this story rather than merely adding another name to a long list.
Five strong public-rating signals
For this dated comparison, a business had to be in the strict 7-place directory and have at least 100 Google reviews. Eligible records were ordered by displayed rating, with review count separating equal ratings.
- Betty's Burgers, Ringwood: 4.8 stars from 1,517 Google reviews
- Hey Sister, Heathmont: 4.4 stars from 350 Google reviews
- Grill'd Burgers – Croydon, Croydon: 4.3 stars from 318 Google reviews
- The Famished Wolf Croydon, Croydon: 4.3 stars from 235 Google reviews
- Grill'd Burgers – Eastland, Ringwood: 3.9 stars from 542 Google reviews
These are public rating signals, not MX awards and not a declaration of Maroondah’s “best burger”. Ratings change, and they do not compare menu style, value, dietary needs, delivery experience or what an individual reader wants from a burger.

What makes a burger worth recommending?
Some people want a simple classic. Others judge the bun, the fillings, the sides, the value or whether the order travels well. That local knowledge is exactly what a category label cannot provide.
Send this guide to the person with the strongest burger opinion, then tell MX: Which local burger would you recommend, and what makes it work for you?

Data note: this page uses the approved MX Food Business Master dated 18 August 2026. The strict directory contains approved, operational Victorian records in the nominated local suburb and postcode whose primary public category is Hamburger restaurant. It does not attempt to list every cafe, pub, restaurant or takeaway with a burger on the menu. Ratings, opening hours, menus, access and business details can change; check directly before visiting or ordering.
