Croydon holds the largest Italian-food cluster in the approved August snapshot. Five of the area’s 16 operational businesses primarily classified as Italian restaurants are in Croydon, with another two in Croydon South.

The bigger story is reach: the strict directory spans 10 suburbs, from Bayswater and Kilsyth to Ringwood, Vermont and Warranwood.

Why Croydon stands out

Croydon’s five strict records are not all in one format. The public listings include businesses identified as trattorias, pizzerias, a cafe-restaurant and broader Italian dining. Three addresses sit around Main Street and Hewish Road, while two more extend the category towards Mount Dandenong Road and McAdam Square.

Croydon South adds a striking small cluster of its own: two Italian restaurants listed only a few street numbers apart on Bayswater Road. Together, Croydon and Croydon South account for seven of the 16 strict records.

Italian food and pizza overlap, but they are not the same guide

Pizza is central to many local Italian listings, including several businesses in the strict directory. But the Italian category also captures restaurants whose public identity is broader than pizza alone.

For this dated comparison, a business had to be in the strict 16-place directory and have at least 100 Google reviews. Eligible records were ordered by displayed rating, with review count separating equal ratings.

What does the category label miss?
