Maroondah Asian Food Guide: What Each Suburb’s Food Map Shows

The current MX map contains 84 operational Asian-food venues across nine cuisine groupings. Croydon and Ringwood lead with 20 records each, but the story changes when the cuisines are separated: Ringwood has the largest Japanese and sushi cluster, while Bayswater has the clearest Vietnamese concentration.

This is an umbrella guide for finding places. It is not a suggestion that Asia has one food culture. The cuisine labels below remain separate, and mixed or fusion venues have their own category.

Three large centres tell three different stories

Croydon has the broadest spread in the current data. Its 20 records cover seven groupings, led equally by Indian and South Asian, Japanese and sushi, and Thai venues with four each.

Ringwood also has 20 records, but seven Japanese and sushi businesses make that cluster more pronounced. Eastland contributes much of the concentration, alongside venues elsewhere in the suburb.

Bayswater’s 15 records include five Vietnamese venues, four Indian and South Asian venues and three Thai venues. That makes its Mountain Highway and station-area network distinct from both Croydon and Ringwood.

The smaller-suburb pattern

Ringwood East has nine records across six groupings. Croydon South’s four records lean Chinese, while Heathmont’s four lean Thai. Vermont has three different groupings among three records.

Bayswater North, Kilsyth and Ringwood North each have two. Croydon North, Kilsyth South and Wonga Park each have one. No qualifying record appeared for Croydon Hills or Warranwood in this snapshot.

Why fusion needs its own lane

Six records use a generic Asian, Asian-fusion or mixed category. They are included because they form part of the local choice, but the database does not justify assigning them to a particular country.

Where a venue has a specific primary category, that category takes priority. Broader category fields are used only when the primary label is generic. This keeps the directory useful without pretending an automated listing can describe a venue’s cultural identity, regional cooking or menu accurately.

For this dated comparison, a venue had to be in the 84-place guide and have at least 100 Google reviews. Eligible records were ordered by displayed rating, with review count separating equal ratings.

What does your suburb do especially well?

The database can show clusters, but it cannot explain the family behind a restaurant, the regional traditions represented on a menu or the dish locals return for. That part of the guide should be built with venues and readers.
